February 29, 2024 – The Choose Ohio First grant was created in 2022 by the Ohio Department of Higher Education to assist college students in Ohio who are studying science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM). The grant awards scholarships to Ohioans who are enrolled in “innovative academic programs,” and Kettering College is included on that list.

Hana’a Hindi is a Nursing student at Kettering College who has received the Choose Ohio First Grant and will be graduating this December to begin her nursing career. As a recipient of the grant, she attended the Choose Ohio First Scholar Showcase at the Statehouse Atrium in Columbus. She created a presentation to showcase what she has been learning with state officials, including Senator Bob Hackett and Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education Mike Duffey (pictured below).

Hana’a decided to present on the correlation between dietary fiber intake and Type 2 diabetes. This topic came from her own personal health issues and working alongside Dr. Ulloth in her Health and Wellness class. Her research presents the benefits of fiber as well as calling attention to an alarming fact that 95% of all Americans are not getting the right amount.

Examining how increasing fiber intake can be used as a tool to prevent diabetes is something Hana’a found to be an important factor most people might not consider. She says, “A lot of people think of colon cancer or digestive health when they think of fiber, but I wanted to highlight a different impact fiber can have, so I looked at diabetes. It’s an increasing problem in America, and the number is growing with the type of food we are eating.”

A unique path led Hana’a to study nursing at Kettering College. She was studying to be a dietician at another college, but she wasn’t enjoying it, and she knew it wasn’t where she wanted to be. She took a year and a half off and began working, assuming perhaps college wasn’t her path.

“I knew I had to have a career with other people. That’s what fuels me.”

She got a job at Kettering Health Main Campus in the materials department. It was at this job that she felt the call to be a nurse. She says, “Hearing the stories nurses told and how they were helping people made me realize I wanted to have those stories, too.”

That was in October and by January she was already enrolled to start her journey toward becoming a nurse. She knows this is the right path and is excited to start her career. She says she looks most forward to “having that challenge every day of using your brain but also making those social interactions. I knew I had to have a career with other people. That’s what fuels me.”

Congratulations on receiving the Choose Ohio First grant, Hana’a. We’re proud to have you represent Kettering College to the state, and we look forward to you having your own stories to tell as a nurse very soon.
