Each year, Chopard draws inspiration from the Chinese zodiac signs and provides a new interpretation for the dial. Maki is an ancient craft from Japan. 2018 is the Chinese Lunar Year of the Dog. The dog ranks eleventh in the zodiac, representing generosity and loyalty. Chopard decided to choose the Asian Akita dog as a representative. An Akita dog on the dial looks far into the distance, the surrounding environment is lush, dotted with blooming wild orchids, and dragonflies flutter, symbolizing the lucky charm, indicating a good sign.
Maki-e is an ancient lacquer craft, whose name is derived from ‘Urushi’, whose resin is received once a year, but in very small quantities. Collected for three to five years, aged and processed into raw lacquer. The master painter paints layer by layer, each layer is extremely thin, and then sprinkles many tiny iridescent particles, giving it unique depth, brightness and nuance. Only a few masters can master this skill.
Chopard invited Kiichiro Zumura to direct the creation of the dial. Kishiro Zumura is a recognized master of lacquer art and is known as the ‘National Treasure’ in Japan.
