February 21, 2024 — Kettering College is a faith-based healthcare college chartered by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Weniger Award is named after Charles Weniger, Seminary dean, English professor, and public speaker at the Seventh-day Adventist Seminary in the 1950s. The award was created to recognize students at Seventh-day Adventist colleges and universities who exhibit the same exemplary characteristics as Weniger.

This year, a Kettering College Radiologic Technology student, Ashley Back, received the Weniger Award. The unique aspect of this award is that students don’t apply for it; in fact, Ashley wasn’t aware of it or that she was going to be receiving it.

She says, “I was told I was earning an award, but I had never heard of it. They told me the criteria for the award were service, leadership, spirituality, and academics and that only 12 people across the country receive it.”

Ashley says it does feel good to be recognized for things she was simply doing because that’s who she is at her core. She is her class president and is graduating in April with her associate degree but will be continuing at Kettering College to earn her bachelor’s degree. Having academic excellence is a pleasure for her, and she says, “I hold myself to a high standard. I love school and plan to continue to Physician Assistant Studies or medical school.”

In addition to her dedicated pursuit of academic excellence and leadership, Ashley’s everyday life illuminates her belief in serving others. She volunteered through 4-H throughout childhood and has recently started a small non-profit bake sale to support a local animal shelter.

As Ashley graduates in just two months, she is excited to see what the future holds. She is considering obtaining a minor in Spiritual Care as she works toward her bachelor’s degree here. She knows she loves the field of Radiology and would like to stay in that concentration no matter where her career path takes her. She adds, “The great thing about an associate degree in Radiology is that you can go so many different routes.”

Congratulations, Ashley! We’re glad you’re a part of the Kettering College family, and thank you for all your hard work, leadership and focus on serving others as you answer the call to a life in healthcare.
